How to Remove Pet Hair from Furniture and Carpets

Pet hair embeds itself into fabric in a way regular vacuuming often misses, especially on upholstery and carpet. A few specific techniques lift far more hair than a standard vacuum pass.

Step 1: Use a Rubber Glove or Squeegee

Dampen a rubber glove slightly and run your hand across upholstery or carpet in one direction. The rubber creates static and friction that pulls embedded hair to the surface in clumps. A rubber-bladed squeegee works the same way on larger areas.

Step 2: Vacuum in Two Directions

Vacuum once with the fabric grain, then again against it. Hair often lies flat in one direction and a single pass misses a large portion of it.

Step 3: Use a Slightly Damp Sponge for Carpet

A barely damp sponge dragged across carpet gathers hair the same way the rubber glove does, and works well for larger floor areas.

Step 4: Try Dryer Sheets Between Vacuum Passes

Rubbing a used dryer sheet over upholstery reduces static, making remaining hair easier to lift on the next vacuum pass.

Step 5: For Clothes, Use a Damp Cycle in the Dryer

Run clothes on a no-heat, damp tumble cycle for 10-15 minutes before washing. The tumbling action loosens hair that gets pulled into the lint trap instead of the wash.

Preventing Buildup Between Cleanings

  • Brush pets regularly, ideally outside, to reduce shedding indoors
  • Use a washable throw on furniture your pet favors, and wash it weekly
  • Vacuum high-traffic pet areas twice as often as the rest of the home

The rubber-and-friction method works better than most pet-hair-specific vacuum attachments, and costs nothing if you already own a rubber glove.
