A 90-Minute Deep Work Routine That Actually Sticks

The problem with most routines

Productivity advice assumes you control your mornings. Most people don't. The fix is a single protected block — not a whole day redesign.

The 90-minute block

Ninety minutes is the upper limit of sustained human focus. Shorter and you don't reach depth; longer and quality collapses. Schedule one block per day, at the same time, and defend it.

Before the block: the 10-minute setup

  • Close every tab and app not related to the task.
  • Put your phone in another room — not on silent, gone.
  • Write a single sentence: "By the end of this block, I will have ____."
  • Pour water. Use the bathroom. Remove every reason to leave the chair.

During the block

Work on the one task. When your mind wanders — and it will — write the distraction on a sticky note and return. The note captures it so you don't act on it.

Distractions aren't the enemy. Unwritten distractions are. A sticky note is a parking lot for your attention.

After the block: the 5-minute close

  • Note what you finished.
  • Note the next concrete step for tomorrow.
  • Walk away. The break matters as much as the work.

Making it stick

The block fails when it's negotiable. Treat it like a meeting with someone you can't cancel. After two weeks, it stops requiring willpower — it's just what you do at that time.
